Eskmuthe

Musselburgh’s Eskmuthe Rowing Club
celebrated its 10th anniversary with an
exhibition at the town’s museum.
The museum displayed highlights how the sport
of coastal rowing arrived in Musselburgh and
the building of two rowing boats, called St Ayles
skiffs, Honesty and Steedie Falconer.
The exhibition told the story of coastal rowing
and showed how St Ayles skiffs are built. It also
featured a small-scale model of the skiff, built
by club member Graham Irvine. The title of the
exhibition, To The Metal Marker and Beyond, is
a tribute to the early days of the club.

Tawse Were the Days

Education was the theme of our
exhibition and was a wonderful
opportunity for you to visit the museum
and reminisce about the old schooldays.
Memories not always happy ones.
Young visitors were regularly amazed at
such items as the belt or tawse. Even
worse, children who were left handed
were forced to use a device with holes
for their left hand fingers which were
then tied behind their back forcing them
to use their right hand for writing.
